Ranking Every Gintama Opening! (21-1)

So I’m on record multiple times stating that Gintama has one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard and it has THE single best collection of openings period. So many of these songs to me are iconic, catchy, have amazing visuals, and sound amazing. So, just like with black clover, I wanted to rank them in my order from worst to best. Just like the last list, I’ll be taking into account the song, the visuals, and also the episodes that the openings covered. Cause lets face it, there might be an op on here that gets the edge over others mainly because of its association with the episodes it appeared on, and that’s fine.

#21 – Let’s Go Out by AMOYAMO (OP 12)

Episodes 253 – 256 (plus 8 re-runs)

As I was watching the Crunchyroll Collection video with all the openings. I remembered every single one of them, besides this one. I was so confused as to when this opening was until it reached the end and I remembered seeing Kintoki instead of Gintoki in this op for the majority of the episodes lmfao. But it’s a really good song with really nice-looking visuals. Just not that memorable.

#20 – Tooi Nioi by YO-KING (OP 2)

Episodes 25 – 48

I’ve never really thought much of this opening. The song sounds great but the visuals aren’t anything special at all. It’s a solid opening.

#19 – Katte ni MY SOUL by DISH// (OP 20)

Episodes 342 – 353

The visuals are the real reason this sits so low. The song is good and has some great parts that I love but the visuals don’t really do it for me. It’s just a bunch of not-so-cool-looking still images. There is some funny stuff like Shinpachi’s glasses bit and a few cool moments but overall they were just eh. While I did like this arc I didn’t love it as much as others too.

#18 – DAYxDAY by BLUE ENCOUNT (OP 14)

Episodes 266-277

Every opening from this point on is really good. This song bangs and is super catchy. The visuals are great. Don’t have too much to say about it though.

#17 – I Wanna Be by SPYAIR (OP 21)

Episodes 354 – 367, Gintama: The Semi Final

One of the more somber-ish openings, it fits the last leg of the series well. This definitely has one of the best visuals out of all the openings. From the paint-like flashbacks to seeing everyone at the battlefield to the stuff in space, then ending off with the iconic picture of Odd Jobs. It was a great final opening.

#16 – Wonderland by FLiP (OP 11)

Episodes 241 – 252

I love that initial shot of Odd Jobs riding on the road by the ocean. Its wallpaper worthy. This one has a lot of good looking fun shots. What puts it over the previous ones though is the shot of the Shinsegumi with the barbwire all around them as the song crescendos. It’s so dope. The Baragaki arc wasn’t my favorite but this opening is definitely one of the high points of it. The song itself is really good too.

#15 – Anata MAGIC by monobright (OP 6)

Episodes 126 – 149

This brings back fond memories of this stretch from season 1. I really like this song and the visuals are wholesome and funny.

#14 – Dilemma by ecosystem (OP 10)

Episodes 228 – 240

I love how serious the tone of this opening is especially because the Scandal arc is far from serious. The shot of Gin riding up the elevator with all the female side characters looked so good. It was hilarious when they added Hasegawa after the final episode of the Scandal Arc. Then the silhouettes fighting in the sky were clean. The Joi 4 walking with sakura petals falling around them. I just really like the vibe of this opening not to even mention the song is amazing. The singer does a really good job. I love her voice here.

#13 – Stairway Generation by Base Ball Bear (OP 7)

Episodes 151 – 175

This was my favorite opening for a while. It’s instantly recognizable from what sounds like those sounds from what reminds me of a fire station or some type of fire truck. I can’t pinpoint it, but I like it! It’s just fun visuals, and a really fun song to go along with it.

#12 – Kageru by ЯeaL (OP 18)

Episodes 317 – 328

It looks great and it’s catchy as hell. Despite some of the Rukuyo arc’s flaws, I will forever think fondly of it because of this opening. Like I can’t stress how clean the visuals are and how easy it is for both them and the song to get stuck in my head. That first shot with Odd Jobs on the tower will forever be ingrained in my head

#11 – Pride Kakumei by CHiCO with HoneyWorks (OP 15)

Episodes 278-291

I love the vibe of this song. I could close my eyes and just remember the fun times of early season 5. The visuals match that vibe perfectly. The shots of past Gin crying with the Joi 4 transitioning to the Odd Jobs and company are so wholesome. I really enjoy this one.

#10 – Pray by Tommy heavenly6 (OP 1)

Episodes 1 – 24

Now from this point on every opening in my eyes is beyond great. Either they define the series and are iconic for that and/or they’re just super damn good. This one falls into both. For the first opening, it still looks great and has some amazing visuals. The song is iconic that’s all I need to say about it. Also, this opening starts a lot of trends that almost every future opening would have, like having moments from Gins Joi war days among others. I love it and it was the perfect start for the series

#9 – VS by BLUE ENCOUNT (OP 19)

Episodes 317 – 328

Visually it’s the most unique out of all of them. I love the comic book style and I love the visuals as a whole. But this is the second most catchy song on this list. I really struggle to get this song out of my head and I can’t psychically stop myself from singing along when the “lai lai lai lai lai” part comes on. The slip arc was very enjoyable and this made it even more so

#8 – Beautiful Days by OKAMOTO’S (OP 16)

Episodes 292 – 303

Okay, I lied. This opening has the most unique visuals. The whole thing reminds me of a Warhol painting. This might be the most catchy song ever. It’s so simple and sort of repetitive but it sounds so good and it’s infectious. There are three versions of this opening’s visuals. The 2nd and 3rd add scenes from the Shogun Assignation arc that look good. But the first version is the best.

#7 – Giniro no Sora by redballoon (OP 3)

Episodes 50 – 60, 63 – 74

This is another one of those songs that are just iconic to the series. I wouldn’t say the visuals are anything special. They’re good but not great. I love the picnic scene at the end. But this song is so damn amazing, it’s hard to rank this any lower because of it.

#6 – Sakura Mitsutsuki by SPYAIR (OP 13)

Episodes 257 – 265

This song has similar sounding moments to the previous song on this list but not only do the visuals blow op 3 out the water. That scene of Gin chasing Shoyo in the field then Kagura and Shinpachi appear behind him is great. The beam saber fight. The sakura leaves falling around everyone. Oboro vs. Gintoki. It looks amazing. The song itself is one of my favorites too. I could listen to this on repeat all-day

#5 – Kasanaru Kage by Hearts Grow (OP 4)

Episodes 76 – 98

While I love opening’s 1 & 3. This was the first opening that initially really caught my ear. I love the way the song starts and the visuals don’t miss at all with this one.

#4 – Togenkyo Alien by serial TV drama (OP 9)

Episodes 202 – 227

Both visually and sonically the way this song starts is hilarious and amazing. This opening never fails to put a smile on my face. The song progression is outstanding. When everything kicks up, the guitar and drums start going crazy the singer goes into his bag. The shots of the Joi 4, then Kamui and Abuto then Jirocho and Pirako. Then it ends off with Odd Jobs running away from an explosion. It’s so great. Not only does it cover one of the best arcs, but I’ll never forget the opening gag where they fail and crash. It’s one of the funniest moments in this series. This opening is too good and was a great start to the second season.

#3 – Donten by DOES (OP 5)

Episodes 100 – 104, 106 – 123, 125

Every series has that one opening. That opening defines the series, that’s played in the most hype moments. While I think Gintama has a few openings that are better than this. This opening is Gintama’s song. Some of the most memorable moments from the series have had this opening playing over them. It deserves it too. The song is outstanding. DOES outdid themselves with this. I didn’t like the Shinsengumi Crisis arc that much but this opening gives me fond memories of it. The second movie plays this opening during the big fight in the past. It’s just great. I’ve yet to even talk about the visuals which are on the darker more serious side but look amazing.

#2 – Know Know Know by DOES (OP 17)

Episodes 304 – 316

The Farewell Shinsengumi arc is phenomenal. This song matches the vibe of the arc perfectly. I love the drums on this. And it’s one of the catchiest openings. Its impossible not to sing along to “yes I know know know.” Visually, pick your poison. There are a handful of different versions of this opening and they all look great. The paint and blood splatter over some of the scenes from the arc look so good. DOES are the kings of Gintama openings.

#1 – Light Infection by Prague (OP 8)

Episodes 177 – 201

In my mind, two openings could take this top spot. While opening 17 comes close. This is my favorite opening maybe ever. It gives a lot of other phenomenal openings a run for their money. Once again purely serious visuals. But they match the song progression almost too well. From the opening shot of the crows flying above child gin on the battlefield. To little gin and Shoyo transitioning to only adult gin. The same sort of transitions for Shinpachi and Kagura. The Shinsengumi looking cool as hell in the flower field. The close-up of Kyubei after she slices the bamboo. Zenzo and Sarutobi on the tower, Hasegawa smoking under the light on the bench. The close-ups of Kamui and Shinsuke. The shot of Tsukuyo smoking transitioning into the Spider smiling by her side. Then my all-time favorite moment from any opening ever. The beautiful transitioning from child gin with a sword to Joi war gin then it zooming out from gins eye. All backed by somebody singing their heart out. I love the way this song sounds. It’s heaven to my ears. This opening is goated. I didn’t even mention it covers another one of my favorite arcs in the series. It has everything going for it.

Notes – This originally started off as a ranking for both the opening and endings then I realized that it might be too long if I did that. Then I realized that I really don’t have much to say about the endings for this show. they were really good but I never paid much mind to them. I think I’m going to do a tier list ranking every single arc in the series (like every single one, what ever the wiki defines as an arc lol). But I’ve yet to decide on the format of that. Whether I just write it or do an accompanying YouTube video for it. Stay tuned for that. Also Demon Slayer has been really good upon re-watch.
